Breakfast with Piccolo and Pixie Caique at Whitewings Farm Sanctuary
Piccolo and Pixie are but two of the 45 well fed "feathers" at Whitewings Farm Sanctuary. The "feathers" at Whitewings Farm Sanctuary are lovingly cared for by Gloria Ridgway and her husband Ben. I have taken the following excerpt from the Whitewings Farm Sanctuary site.
~~ Over the years we've tried to constantly learn more about HOW to care for the wondrous winged beings with whom we have been charged. Diet (my personal vocation), caring for fearful or phobic birds, housing, toys, socialization, one on one interaction, fledging, flight: all the things that are so important to providing these miraculous creatures with a safe, healthy, and comfortable life. There is still so much to learn, so very much. But slowly as the days and years pass, we do learn. ~~
I have asked Gloria to share with us her 2 Caiques, and, how their day begins. The following is what Piccolo, Pixie and Gloria do to prepare for breakfast at Whitewings Farm Sanctuary. This information was also posted to Gloria's Feeding Feathers List at Yahoo Groups.
Thank you Gloria.
All foods fed are organic.
Pictured are Kashi Cereal assortments from the health food store, almonds in the shell, orange slices, lemon quarters, baby carrots, apple slices, homemade bird bread, mango chunks and pit (my African Grey, PyeWacket, gets the pit most of the time) and cantaloupe chunks.
This assortment is served as each cage is cleaned. We put the foods on the floor of all the cages except for a very old Amazon named Slewfoot, aka, UT. She gets a small plastic lock-in container for her treats. She doesn't LIKE the floor of her house.
Next we make the salad. This is a combination of the following:
Greens: thinnings from the garden; 6 different lettuces, 2 types of kale, collards, baby beets, romaine .... radishes and their accompanying tops if not too big and prickly.
Added: chopped broccoli, cauliflower, celery, jicama and then some freshly squeezed lemon juice and some Apple Cider Vinegar.
Cooked grains from yesterday ... reheated in microwave;
Kamut, oat groats, hulled yellow millet and rye berries were presoaked and then cooked with a combination of two other dry veggie mixes - Piccolo's Porridge and PyeWacket's Pea Soup.
Piccolo and Pixie helping. This is NOT unusual. When they see me doing anything with food and they're out, they fly over to "help". Pixie is on the salad and Piccolo is checking out the grains.
Managed to get it put together with them "helping" and the ONLY way to get them off so I could serve it up was to carry finished salad, birds and all, over to the table and gym. They saw all the goodies had been added to their freshly cleaned "rooms" so getting them into their "rooms" was no trouble at all.
